Reset or relearn procedures should be performed when the engine/transmission are at operating temperature.

As a rule of thumb, every 10 degree increase in operating temperature above 80 degrees C° cuts the life of the fluid in half.

  • Let the car cool down for at least 6 hours, few meters from the place of fluid change, in order to bring the transmission temperature to the lowest value possible
  • Make sure the hoist where the car will be serviced is perfectly level.
  • Before starting, for best results the transmission temperature should be at most 25°C. Servicing during a very cold winter day is preferable.
  • For accurate oil temperature reading, use a scan tool. An infrared tool is usually off by 5 to 10°C
  • If you are not replacing the oil pan, make sure to introduce a crooked tube and suck the remaining 1 liter of oil held by the sump.
  • Put 6 liters of oil in one single pan and use a powerful hand pump. The tranmission temperature will raise and reach 45°C very quickly.
  • The procedure must be done before the fluid temperature reaches 50°C. But for best results, target 40°C max.

After the fluid has been changed, Fluid change (age curve reset) function must be carried out with BMW ISTA+ (Under transmission service functions ABL).

This will allow the TCM to perform a soft re-adaptation.
